LEAGUE RULES & POLICIES
Please review all rules and policies below.
Code of Conduct
The most important rule is observing the spirit of curling. See the Park City Curling Club Code of Conduct
Rules of Curling
All play will be governed by the USCA Rules of Curling and Competition unless stated below or by the league administrator in a pre-league skips meeting. The rules of curling can be found here.
This includes use of the five-rock free guard zone rule.
League Scoring
- 3 points for a win
- 2 points for an OT win
- 1 point for an OT loss
- 0 points for a loss
Determining Who Has Hammer in the First End
During league play, hammer will be determined by a coin flip. The winner of the coin flip will have the choice of hammer in the first end or stone color.
During playoff play, hammer is awarded to the highest seeded team.
Weather Policy
In case of inclement weather, the league manager will contact the skip/contact person via text or call for each team to let them know league will be canceled for the night before 2.5 hours before the start of the games for that evening. If the skips have not been contacted prior to that time, the games will play as scheduled for that evening barring other unforeseen circumstances.
Subs & Team Requirements
All teams must have a minimum of four players on their roster. To play any league game, at least two rostered players must be present; a team must have three players on the ice to play, and the third player may be a substitute provided the other two are rostered. A team may use a maximum of two subs for a game during the regular season. A team may use a maximum of one sub for a game if contesting for the championship.
Substitutes may not play as vice (third) or skip and must play in the front end (lead or second).
If fewer than two rostered players are present, the game will be declared a forfeit.
To request a sub or to volunteer as one, email your name, contact information, and availability to info@parkcitycurlingclub.com.
Game Start Time
The designated start time of a game is 8:15pm for our regular Monday Night League. For play during other times, the designated start time will be 15 minutes after the beginning of the club’s reserved ice time.
As per the 2020-2021 USCA Rules of Curling, R11.Scoring(i), If a team is not available to start a game at the designated time, the following takes place:
(i) If the delay of the start of play is 01:00-14:59 minutes (01:00-09:59 minutes Mixed Doubles), then the non-offending team receives one point, and will have choice of first or second stone in the first end of actual play; one end is considered completed.
(ii) If the delay of the start of play is 15:00-29:59 minutes (10:00-19:59 for Mixed Doubles), then the non-offending team receives one additional point, and choice of first or second stone in the first end of actual play; two ends are considered completed.
(iii) If play has not started at 30 minutes (20 minutes for Mixed Doubles), then the non-offending team is declared the winner by forfeit.
Playdowns
Playdowns may be required for national events such as the Arena National Curling Championship.
If a team desires to participate in a competition the club has received a bid for, they must announce to the board by writing at least 4 months before the first day of the event. If more than one team announces their desire to participate, a playdown will be used to determine who will receive the club’s bid for the event. Due to the inherent difficulties of finding ice time, specifics of when the playdown will take place must be determined on a case by case basis. The playdown will be one 8-end game. The winner of this game will receive the club’s bid for the event. Alternate methods of playdown may be used if agreed upon by both teams. If more than two teams register their desire to participate, the Park City Curling Club Board of Directors will determine the method to be used to choose a winner.
Time
Games are six ends; please keep a steady pace of play so all six ends can be completed before 10:15 PM. Be ready to deliver as soon as your opponent finishes their stone, avoid overthinking shots, and communicate with your skip and opponents as needed to keep the game moving.
Ties
Games that are tied after 6 ends have been played or time restricted will go to a one-shot draw to the button if possible (due to the way our ice works this year, it will be possible on most nights). Anyone on your team may throw the stone and offensive sweeping is allowed. The team who would have had the hammer if another end would have been played will throw second at this shootout. The team with the closest shot to the button will score 2 pts. and the other team will score 1 pt.
League Champion
The league will conclude with a one-week playoff to determine the champion: the 1st seed from the regular season will play the 2nd seed for the championship. Regular-season tiebreakers for seeding are, in order: head-to-head record, most regulation wins, fewest regulation losses, and then a coin flip.
PARK CITY CURLUNG CLUB CODE OF CONDUCT
The most important rule is observing the spirit of curling.
Curling is a game of skill and of tradition. A shot well executed is a delight to see and it is also a fine thing to observe the time-honored traditions of curling being applied in the true spirit of the game. Curlers play to win, but never to humble their opponents. A true curler never attempts to distract opponents, nor to prevent them from playing their best, and would prefer to lose rather than to win unfairly.
Curlers never knowingly break a rule of the game, nor disrespect any of its traditions. Should they become aware that this has been done inadvertently, they will be the first to divulge the breach.
While the main object of the game of curling is to determine the relative skill of the players, The Spirit of Curling demands good sportsmanship, a kindly feeling and honorable conduct.
This spirit should influence both the interpretation and the application of the rules of the game and also the conduct of all participants on and off the ice.
As part of the spirit of curling, if you aren’t sure the correct ruling, ask an experienced curler and communicate with the opposing team. Assume goodwill with your opponent. Never purposefully delay the game to deny your opponent an extra end to catch up.
AS A MEMBER OF THE PARK CITY CURLING CLUB, I WILL:
- Observe the Spirit of Curling, and contribute to an environment and culture within the Club reflective of the Spirit of Curling and good sportsmanship.
- Remember that the Park City Ice Arena is a family friendly environment.
- Conduct myself in an honorable manner both on and off the ice.
- Consume alcoholic beverages in a responsible manner. If I notice anyone who is seemingly intoxicated, I will notify a club official for the safety of everyone on the ice.
- Treat all staff, club members, competitors, and guests with the highest respect. I understand that verbal abuse of any teammate, competitor, official, member, guest or other person is absolutely unacceptable and may be grounds for termination.
- Control my temper. I will NEVER throw a broom or damage any club property.
- Observe this Code of Conduct when representing the Park City Curling Club in other events.
- Observe the Rules of Curling, and interpret the Rules of Curling in an impartial manner, always keeping in mind that the purpose of the rules is to ensure the game is played in an orderly and fair manner.
- Never knowingly break a rule – but if I do, I will divulge the breach.
- Take no action that could be interpreted as an attempt to intimidate or demean any opponents, teammates or officials.
- Be on time for ice setup and play quickly. I will observe proper curling etiquette and show respect for the Club schedule.
- Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
BREACHES OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT:
- If it’s super major and agreed by the board – immediate suspension from play, board hearing on next steps
